Tim Challies reviews an interesting new book by Candice Watters entitled Get Married: What Women Can Do to Help It Happen (Moody Press). I was honored to receive a copy that my wife Marni has been reading. I anticipate she’ll write a guest post for us when she finishes the book.
Watters and I agree that the state of singleness is not synonymous with the gift of singleness. I first discussed the gift of singleness issue in a chapter in With One Voice, and later in a brief article.

Huckabee Concedes
I could not agree more with these words from John Mark Reynolds:
“Mike Huckabee will be a major player in the future of the Party, especially if John McCain does not win the fall election. In any case, he should write some serious books, form a think tank to engage young conservatives, and press for a Party that does not leave its base behind……
Mike Huckabee has earned the trust of a plurality of Republican Evangelical voters. He can use that trust to broaden the outlook of his voters and so do well for himself by doing good for them.”
Read the whole thing. The key to Huckabee’s political future is mending fences with sectors of the Republican party which were alienated by his campaign. Though the reminder to consider the poor is needed in Republican circles, his occasional “anti-wealthy” language did not enhance his image (fair or unfair) as one who had questionable credentials as a fiscal conservative. It made him look bitter and petty, and it fit in to the “thin-skinned” stereotype. Lastly, he needs to move his religious base into a conservatism with broader appeal (over at Huckabee’s blog tonight, most commenters are talking about a third party run). Huckabee cannot merely be the “Christian candidate” and win.
Note: I say all this as an evangelical Christian who voted for Huckabee.
Barack Obama Supports Infanticide
Former Senator Rick Santorum pens a must-read op-ed piece in the Philadelphia Inquirer on Barack Obama’s opposition to the Born Alive Infants Protection Act. Excerpt:
During the partial-birth abortion debate, Congress heard testimony about babies that had survived attempted late-term abortions. Nurses testified that these preterm living, breathing babies were being thrown into medical waste bins to die or being “terminated” outside the womb. With the baby now completely separated from the mother, it was impossible to argue that the health or life of the mother was in jeopardy by giving her baby appropriate medical treatment.
The act simply prohibited the killing of a baby born alive. To address the concerns of pro-choice lawmakers, the bill included language that said nothing “shall be construed to affirm, deny, expand or contract any legal status or legal right” of the baby. In other words, the bill wasn’t intruding on Roe v. Wade.
Who would oppose a bill that said you couldn’t kill a baby who was born? Not Kennedy, Boxer or Hillary Rodham Clinton. Not even the hard-core National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL). Obama, however, is another story. The year after the Born Alive Infants Protection Act became federal law in 2002, identical language was considered in a committee of the Illinois Senate. It was defeated with the committee’s chairman, Obama, leading the opposition.
Let’s be clear about what Obama did, once in 2003 and twice before that. He effectively voted for infanticide. He voted to allow doctors to deny medically appropriate treatment or, worse yet, actively kill a completely delivered living baby.
Read the whole thing.

The Elisha Foundation
You may have noticed the sponsor links either above or to the right of this post. I consider these to all be worthwhile, God-centered ministries and organizations. The newest addition is The Elisha Foundation. As their website explains:
“The Elisha Foundation was founded to provide refreshment and encouragement to families caring for people with special needs. Through programs such as family retreats, we seek to provide access to resource professionals, educational specialists and other valuable resources while spending refreshing quality time as a family.”
Next week I’ll hopefully be posting an interview with founder Justin Reimer. Along with his wife Tamara, Justin sensed a call from God to minister to families with special needs when their 11-year old son, Elisha, was born with Down Syndrome. After over 8 years of waiting and praying the Lord opened the door of ministry to them and the inaugural Elisha Foundation Retreat was kicked off in December of 2005. The Elisha Foundation now provides many outlets for people wanting to serve among the disabled community.
You and You Alone – Sovereign Grace Music
I am enjoying this new Sovereign Grace Music album put out by Joel Sczebel, Josh Sczebel, and Pat Sczebel. Pat Sczebel is Associate Pastor at Christ Community Church in Surrey, British Columbia. Like other albums Sovereign Grace has produced, these songs blend a high view of God and musical excellence. One distinctive of this particular album is the focus on the character of God, particularly His covenant faithfulness to His people.
Here are some of the lyrics from Over All:
You are over all
Sovereign King
You are over all
Sovereign Lord
None can thwart Your plan
You are seated high upon Your throne
Over all
Over all afflictions
And every storm of life
In the midst of suffering
Almighty, You reign
You are God eternal
And You can never change
You are over all
The song The Greatest of All focuses on the atoning work of Christ. Other songs emphasize specific attributes of God, such as his mercy and forgiveness (In You) and electing love (Jesus, You Are Beautiful). I Surrender All is a wonderful song of responsive worship (with a slower tempo). I recommend this album for your personal worship and meditation. Lyrics and sheet music are available for free, and the album is still being offered for only $6 (not sure how much longer that offer will last).
Fighter Verse System
Marni and I were reviewing some of our fighter verses today. The fighter verse system is something we picked up when we were at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, MN and have been trying to maintain here in Riverside, CA. Here are a few of the the recent verses:
Psalm 27:4-5 – To recite February 16 & 17
“One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to inquire in his temple. For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock.”
Psalm 27:13-14 – To recite February 23 & 24
“I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living! Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!”
Philippians 2:10b-11 – To recite March 1 & 2
“At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
The idea is that 1-2 verses is memorized every week, and then can be corporately recited as a family or church gathering on the weekend. The benefits are numerous.
Price will come to about $8.75/copy (including shipping). Please allow 7-10 days for delivery. (Sales tax has been added for CA purchases, per CA law.)
