J. Gresham Machen:
“The only way in which a state-controlled school can be kept even relatively healthy is through the absolutely free possibility of competition by private schools and church schools; if it once becomes monopolistic, it is the most effective engine of tyranny and intellectual stagnation that has yet been devised.” — J. Gresham Machen: Selected Shorter Writings

What is most odious about the 106 billion dollars allocated for public education in the recent stimulus package, along with the 67 billion that was spent on it in 2008 (according to the Heritage Foundation) is that none of it goes toward the ultimate purpose for education, namely to exalt Christ in students’ hearts and minds and to train them to be His ambassadors in this world. The above sums of money beggar the imagination, and yet what has occupied my mind for years is that, by comparison, Christians themselves put a pittance toward Christ-exalting education.
