I don't watch much baseball, but last night I was fortunate to be watching when Albert Pujols smashed a 96 mile-an-hour fastball almost into the upper decks. What some don't know is that Pujols is also a giant of a man off the field--a dedicated Christian, husband, father, and active in caring for the less fortunate (see, for example, this 60 minutes report). I was curious to learn that Mr. Pujols is the subject of a fast-selling book by Scott Lamb and Tim Ellsworth. Some of the endorsements: He embodies the best of sports and of heroes. His Christian testimony, his commitment to God … [Read more...] about Albert Pujols

Tim Keller – The Meaning of Marriage
I'm looking forward to Tim and Kathy Keller's new book, The Meaning of Marriage: Facing the Complexities of Commitment with the Wisdom of God (forthcoming November 1). I've always enjoyed Keller for his bibically-rooted wisdom and the simplicity with which he conveys complicated topics (not to mention his ability to minister to Christians and challenge skeptics with the same writings). I'm sure this book will be no different. The publisher's description: Based on the sermon series by Timothy Keller, this book shows everyone—Christians, skeptics, singles, long-time married couples, and … [Read more...] about Tim Keller – The Meaning of Marriage
Arthur Holmes (1924-2011)
In case you haven't heard, Dr. Arthur Holmes was recently promoted to glory. A philosophy professor at Wheaton College, Holmes wrote The Idea of a Christian College, a book I found very helpful when I was writing Thriving at College. Among other things, Holmes rebuffed the common student question "When am I ever going to use this stuff?" His response: The question to ask about an education is not ‘What can I do with it?’ but rather ‘what is it doing to me, as a person?’ Education has to do with the making of persons; Christian education with the making of Christian persons. Some students … [Read more...] about Arthur Holmes (1924-2011)
Christianity Today Interviews Ron Paul
Sarah Pulliam Bailey of Christianity Today interviews GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul. I haven't finished reading it yet, but so far it's very interesting. Paul appears to be securing a greater level of support from evangelical Christians than he did in 2008, and he won the Family Research Council's Values Voters Summit on October 8 (though FRC President Tony Perkins seemed to downplay the results to some extent, noting that many of the attendees left after Paul's speech). I look forward to reading the rest of it. (Full-disclosure: I am thus far undecided on the GOP primary.) … [Read more...] about Christianity Today Interviews Ron Paul
Trak Magazine
For those of you who enjoy World magazine (as I have for years), and have kids in the teen years, you might want to know about Trak, a new monthly periodical from God's World Publications specifically for teen readers. The first issue came out this past month, and I've been given permission to post it. Subsequent PDF versions will be available only to subscribers. I am a regular contributor to Trak, and my article appears on page 17 (no, I did not come up with the nifty, creative, rhythmic title for the column). :) … [Read more...] about Trak Magazine
