Hi Dr Chediak, thanks a lot for the video. Not being a very 'smart and heady' person, i really gained a lot from the video. Since God, thru Dr Mooney, introduced me to Pastor Piper, my faith and courage in christ to live the christian life and obey his command to evangelize the world has been helped tremendously. In my pre-piper days, i knew about 'passion' for God from the heart but not from the 'head.' Naturally, being a heart-wired guy, God has been helping me with the head part as i look to be as balanced and also anticipate heady philosophical-type people and audiences. Moreover, God is heady and the scriptures are quite heady too.
i'm sorry, i was getting to a question but i had to leave immediately and didn't think i'd be able to convey my message better than i was doing whenever i got to it, so i just sent it. i'll just continue
Moreover, God is heady and the scriptures are quite heady too. Being a simple kind of guy, i've decided to concentrate only on Dr Piper's resources (ofcourse the bible is my one and only first) because he's the best example of the 'head' and 'heart' combo. Also, as a preacher, he's the closest in 'style and substance' to C.H. Spurgeon (whom i will study later)who along with Dr. Piper and Martin Luther are my favorites since the great one himself, Paul the apostle. Having said that, there's a plethora of really sound, excellent theology and takes on 'how to do life' out there...some many great bks, teachers and preachers out there, sometimes i feel guilty and more afriad (healthy) when i stand b4 God, for there's no reason, esp ignorance, not to be all i can be for the glory of God. Sometimes i almost wish there weren't this much good stuff, (though not true) becos i feel as though, the less good stuff, the more i can use ignorance as an excuse....just random thoughts. Due to the inability to stop myself from going too deep into a person's theology and books, i had put limits to myself as per whom i will be thorough with, for now at least. Having heard Tim Keller, he seems to present that philosopher-type God-centered mentality. It strikes me in all the right ways and i am tempted to 'dive into him.' I can research (and i've done a little) but i'm afraid i'll go deeper than i'd like to, which will take away from other things. So, here's the question, do you know enough about him and his theology/thinking pattern about God and life to give an informed (however short) opinion? Secondly, do you suggest getting to "know him," maybe buy his latest book etc. Or will i get most (of course, not all cos personalities are different) of 'his stuff' from getting 'to know' Dr Piper. Knowing someone for me looks like this: i plan to listen to and studying thoroughly (as best as an uneducated/unlearned/lazy guy can) all of Dr Piper's sermons and bks since 1980.
Like a movie critic, can you help me? sorry for the long writing, my english and explaining still needs work. thanks for anticipated help.
Dear Dr Chediak, please i want to say a big thanks for making Dr. Kellar's stuff available on my page. i feel soo ungrateful for what i'm about to say. I don't think (as much as i know of my evil mind and intentions) i mean to be or sound ungrateful.
Can you see if it's possible to provide us with Dr Kellar's address(es) on thursday (whenever he was supposed to speak next at Berkely). i don't know how it all works, i would go wherever it is and buy it if it's sold. thanks for all you've done. since being introduced to your blog, i've found lots of posts very helpful, thanks immensely. i promise (God willing..lol) i won't bug you for some time, i've probably used up all my opportunities.
Dr Chediak, one thing i forgot to ask: as you may have guessed from my english, i haven't read a lot of books, compared to most people. i was looking at the bks you read last year and man!...it's quite a bit. I'm sorry if i am asking too personal a question, after all you are in the position of 'my master,' and maybe not in the US, but where i come from, you don't even see your boss/superior/teacher very often, talk less of talk to them not to mention, ask them a question; a personal one for that matter. Please i am sorry i come off as disrespectful. i really really want to know so bad if it cost $, i would pay.
When pple read, how much do they know from that book (how much info is retained). i also know that different pple have different retention rates (spurgeon i read, read 5/6 bks per week and could tell what's in every one in decent detail). How much is one supposed to retain in order to do justice to a particular read and moreso, really know, very thoroughly what arguments etc are made in the book. right now, i've been taught, 'read one and know it very well rather than read twenty and know it 'okay.' Also, wide reading expands your knowledge base and one gets different viewpoints on different issues even 'bad' bks or books that argue an opinion that the reader doesn't regard highly. please may you kindly give me your thoughts on these thoughts? thanks again.
